So Not Martha
The topic has come up lately while talking with a few friends, that curious tension between enjoying some domestic tasks and quite simply NOT wanting to be a Martha. (Martha Stewart, that is. Though the Biblical Martha would work as well.) It may not be fair of me, because most of what I know about Martha Stewart comes from Saturday Night Live skits. But I tend to associate the name with taking domesticity too far – moving toward perfectionism, over-complications and fussiness. If I slipped into theological mode, I might be tempted to call it idolatry, or the cult of the home.
Well, I need not worry. See that beautiful pancake art? I saw this idea of letting your child paint their pancakes with colored syrup recently, and LOVED it! Besides being fun and easy, it’s actually likely to result in the child using less syrup – win! Wednesdays are normally our fun baking day, so I thought we’d try it yesterday. D had a blast with the painting… It was hours later that I tasted one for myself and realized why she’d eaten so little after all the fun of painting – they tasted TERRIBLE! No Martha here – apparently I can’t even make pancakes.
Thanks for coming back! As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
